First Meeting of the Tajikistan-Japan Intergovernmental Commission on Economic, Technical and Scientific Cooperation

On April 14, 2017 in Tokyo, under the chairmanship of Mr. Nematullo Khikmatullozoda, Minister of Economic Development and Trade of the Republic of Tajikistan, and Mr. Toshihiro Aiki, Special Representative for Central Asia, Deputy Director-General of European Affairs Bureau of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, held the first meeting of the Tajikistan-Japan Intergovernmental Commission on Economic, Technical and Scientific Cooperation.

Official representatives of the two countries, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan, Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Japan Association for Trade with Russia and NIS  (ROTOBO), Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO), Tajikistan-Japan Culture & Economic Friendship Corporation, Japan Association of Travel Agents (JATA),  Japan Institute of Energy Economics, Russia Eurasia Research Institute, Professors of the University of Tsukuba, as well as representatives of companies and organizations of Japan, in particular ITOCHU Corporation, Cokey Systems Ltd., and Hokaido Intellect Tank participated at the meeting.

The meeting covered a wide range of issues of bilateral cooperation, in particular, in the light of the realization of the agreements reached following the meetings of the Founder of the Peace and National Unity, the Leader of the Nation, the President of the Republic of Tajikistan, Mr. EmomaliRahmon and the Prime Minister of Japan, Mr. Shinzo Abe.

The parties focused the attention on the most significant aspects of the agenda of bilateral cooperation – issues of economy, transport, energy, and industrial sector, scientific, technical and cultural cooperation.

A comprehensive exchange of views on the economic and investment situation in Tajikistan took place and promising areas of cooperation in these areas were pointed.

The participants of the meeting noted that the holding of the first meeting of the Intergovernmental Commission facilitates the identification of new and intensification of existing areas of economic cooperation, determination of further prospects for its development.

In the course of the meeting, the sides agreed and formed joint approaches to the development of the existing untapped potential for cooperation at the government level, as well as within the framework of partnership relations between representatives of the private sector of the two countries.

As the result of the meeting of Tajikistan-Japan Intergovernmental Commission, a joint protocol was signed.

At the end, Co-chairman of the Tajik part of the Commission invited his Japanese counterpart to the second meeting of the Intergovernmental Commission, which is scheduled to be held in Dushanbe.
